Review: The Song Rising by Samantha Shannon

The highly-anticipated third instalment in The Bone Season series, The Song Rising is ultimately my least favourite so far. Personally I haven’t had the best ride with this series; the first book had me proclaiming it was my favourite series since Harry Potter, the second disappointed but left me optimistic for the third, and now … honestly, I’m a bit worried. The Bone Season gave us original, fantasy/dystopian magic. It was wonderful and everything I never knew I wanted. The Mime Order was a Victorian murder mystery jaunt around London and, though I could appreciate it, it wasn’t to my taste. And now The Song Rising, which just felt like Mission: Impossible in a slightly more futuristic London and everything fell just a little bit flat. It picks up where the second left off, with Paige having won the crown of Underqueen and discovered the terrible truth about Jaxon. And then … we just flounder for a few hundred pages. Paige becoming Underqueen was not a story choice I really got on board with, mainly …

Review: The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon

The second book in The Bone Season series, probably the most highly anticipated read of 2015 for me and, to be frank, only a three-star book in my eyes. The ending, however, was so damn exciting it earned a star all on its own. Sadly the rest of the novel didn’t quite live up to the first instalment. Samantha Shannon has said many times that each book in this series is going to have a very different feel to it, so that the reader has a different experience with each book. Book #1 was an introduction; survivalist and fantastic, dystopian and almost YA but not really. (And it was fabulous.) The Mime Order follows protagonist Paige Mahoney on the run in Scion London, and has much more of a murder mystery feel to it. It’s futuristic but has a Victorian London twist, which was highly enjoyable. I just couldn’t get on with the plot. I had a similar problem with book #1; Shannon’s plots just don’t really do it for me. They’re not bad, but …

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT from “The Song Rising” by Samantha Shannon

I am absolutely thrilled to have been chosen as a Bone Season Advocate to help promote Samantha Shannon’s glorious fantasy series. My social media followers will know that I’m a huge fan of the books and am eagerly awaiting the third installment in the series: The Song Rising out on March 7th 2017! Today I have an exciting sneak peek at the new book in the form of the prologue for The Song Rising. Spoiler warning: It’s probably not a good idea to read the prologue if you haven’t read The Bone Season or The Mime Order.

Review: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas

I don’t know what to do with myself. The book is over. And I just … can’t. Just when you think Sarah J Maas has hit her best, she just keeps getting better. She’s a flipping legend. A Court of Thorns and Roses was excellent, but it paled in comparison to this. I enjoyed it, even through the tropes. I wasn’t mad about Feyre or Tamlin, but I liked the world, the ideas and Maas’s story-crafting abilities. You can actually see her writing improve with each novel she releases, it’s inspiring. Yes, ACOTAR was good. But this. Maas shows us just how much of a queen author she is in this. She gave us magic, worlds beyond worlds, new and awesome characters, immense character growth, chemistry, action, reflection and spicy hot love. She took every single niggly dissatisfaction I had with the previous book and said “actually, I knew what I was doing the whole time.” Perhaps what I love and respect the most about what Maas has done, is that she has taken the …
